becky-poster
Movie: Becky

Main Cast: Lulu Wilson, Kevin James, Joel McHale and more

Release Date: June 5, 2020 (Now on VOD)

IMDB synopsis: “A teenager’s weekend at a lake house with her father takes a turn for the worse when a group of convicts wreaks havoc on their lives.”

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the movie, “Becky”, which stars the young talented actress Lulu Wilson and comedians Kevin James and Joel McHale. When I saw the preview/trailer I was excited to watch this! I’ve been saying Lulu would be the perfect final girl and it finally came true! This is not your typical horror. More of an action with a mix of horror elements. Lulu is a rising star to watch since Ouija, Annabelle and The Haunting of Hill House. She kills her role each time and this film was no different! The movie starts with Becky going on a trip to the lake with her dad. Right from the start you feel this tension between them. We find out Becky has lost her mother recently to cancer (an illness not sure if they mention its cancer). Her father has now started dating another woman with a kid and it has only been a year (if I am remembering correctly). It turns out her dad brought his new GF to the lake house with her kid and Becky is upset that her dad has moved on so fast.

Lulu does a great job of showing Becky’s resentment towards her dad and all the anger she is holding in. At the same time this is going on Kevin James character that happens to be a Nazi has just escaped prison with a group of friends. They head towards the lake house where Becky is since they hid something in the basement. Pretty much they hold Becky’s dad, GF and GF’s son hostage. Becky was hiding out in a treehouse since she got upset with her dad. Becky ends up kicking ass and using her rage and anger to defeat the bad guys. A few gory scenes. Definitely worth the watch. I really enjoyed it. Kevin James as a bad guy was a bit odd, but he did okay. Go watch it you won’t regret it!

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing Jesse Reyez new album, “Before Love Came to Kill Us”. We get the return of Jesse’s raspy soulful voice, that is reminiscent of the legendary Amy Winehouse. The albums consists of Spanglish tracks filled with pure emotions. The main theme is heartbreak and love! One of my favorite tracks is “Deaf (who are you)” it’s that spiteful track. Vibe of a woman scorned going off! Then you get “Intruders” with a dope guitar riff. You also get the amazing collabo with 6black, “Imported”. One of my favorite tracks with one of my favorite lines, “Get over them by getting under me”!

The album has a deluxe version that consists of 17 tracks with a running time of 58 minutes. One of the stand out tracks is, “La Memoria” very emotional track in Spanish. She sings some pretty deep shit! For those who don’t understand Spanish she is telling the guy who broke her heart that he needs to find someone like himself and lose in love to know what it feels to be heartbroken. She sings,”Te hace falta enamorarte de una perra/Te hace falta perder una guerra/Te hace falta encontrar una gemela/Que te quiebre el corazón/Que te deje en tu pena”. Really dope project go check it out!

Hello Latino Gang and Musica Urbana fans,

Today I will be reviewing Exciel’s track “No Te Tardes Remix”. The remix features Zoee Beltran, Danny Rose, Newtro and Q’Viva. Exciel is a San Diego artist under the label BlackWav Records. The track would fall under Reggaeton with a mix of latin trap. It is a dope track about two people, one who happens to be in a relationship. It is a complicated love story of them having to sneak around and unable to wait to see each other again. I don’t condone cheating, but can’t deny it is a catchy song lol. The hook is addicting and the beat is a vibe! The features also add their own flavor to the track. Go peep it, if you just want to listen to a feel good song!

Artist: Ensilence

Album: Ghetto Gorgeous

Release Date: March 8, 2020

Buy/Stream: All streaming platforms

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing Ensilence’s EP, “Ghetto Gorgeous”. I came across Ensilence on IG thru a mutual follower. There was a video where she was spitting poetic bars and I was pleasantly surprised. Began following her and came across this EP. I had to review it because it definitely deserves to be put on rotation and be heard! If I could describe Ensilence’s delivery and cadence it would be poetic rap! She reminds me of a mix of Jean Grae, Bahamadia and MC Lyte.

This EP consists of 7 tracks with a running time of 14 minutes. It is a dope project to just vibe to and chill! All production on this project is by Tekbeatz. Production is amazing you get a mix of boombap, jazzy and soulful beats. It meshes well with Ensilence’s lyrics. My favorite track is the title track, “Ghetto Gorgeous” it gave me an early 90’s vibe. Ensilence goes in with her smooth lyricism. Then you get, “Chemist Tree” that has a bit of a grimey feel to it. Check out this dope project! Don’t sleep on the goddess who is a dope emcee!

NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “FROM LA TO NY!!! – XP THE MARXMAN – CONTINUA A SPARARE (KEEP FIRING) EP REVIEW”

BY: GABY MORENO

.:HHB All Day:.

Artist: XP The Marxman

Album: Continua A Sparare (Keep Firing)

Release Date: April 20, 2020

Buy/Stream: All streaming platforms

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing XP The Marxman’s new project, “Continua A Sparare (Keep Firing)”. The full project was entirely produced by the New York legend Roc Marciano! XP continues to keep the gas on the pedal with no sign of stopping! One of the hardest working emcees with quality music! Always representing for LA (San Fernando Valley to be exact). I was looking forward to see him kill the stage at the THOP fest earlier this year, but then the whole quarantine happened so we will have to wait! I have seen him perform once in SD and he commands the stage!

This project contains 6 tracks with a running time of 17 minutes. XP has also been dropping visuals consistently as well. He just dropped a video for the main single of this project, “The Have Nots” about a month ago. The music video was directed by the talented emcee I Suppose. The video takes place in an apocalyptic world due to the Rona quarantine as XP raps in a Hazmat suit! Very dope concept! The production on this project is grimey and has that NY sound complimented by XP’s signature raspy voice. All the tracks are dope. One of my favorites is, “Get Paid” as a horror and Wes Craven fan the first line stood out to me, “Wes Craven is safe haven/Ya ain’t never coming close to what we call sacred!” There are other horror references in the other tracks like, “No Idea” he mentions Hannibal Lecter. So horror fans will enjoy this as well. Go check out this project you won’t regret it! Support dope emcees!

NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “IN THE SPIRIT OF ERIC DRAVEN!!! – HANZO BLADEZ – BIRDS OF PREY EP REVIEW”

BY: GABY MORENO

Artist: Hanzo Bladez

Album: Birds of Prey

Release Date: May 20, 2020

Buy/Stream: Bandcamp

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing Hanzo Bladez’ debut EP, “Birds of Prey”. The intro is hard as fuck with a clip from The Crow movie. It definitely sets the tone for this grimey project and the theme! The EP cover is dope as well, there is a graveyard with a mic, the crow and hands coming out of the grave! The EP consists of 7 deadly venomous tracks with an approximate running time of 22 minutes. Hanzo self produced some of his track, but also features production from Enels and Iron Lungz. One of the stand out tracks to me was, “The Feared One”! Hanzo goes in bar for bar and the beat is crazy with the dope scratches and sample.

Then there is the following track, “Drum Machine” with a more melancholy beat as Hanzo raps about legacy and making music with the greats! This project brought me back to that 90’s grimey rap. It is a very nostalgic EP. It’s great to continue to hear this sound being nourished! From top to bottom this a great body of work. It is a very dope project. Go check it out and support that lyrical grimey Hip Hop!
