NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “WESTWORLD SET IN CIVIL WAR ERA!!! – ANTEBELLUM MOVIE REVIEW” (SPOILERS)

Movie: Antebellum

Main Cast: Janelle Monáe, Eric Lange, Jena Malone, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Gabourey Sidibe and more.

Release Date: September 18, 2020 (VOD)

IMDB synopsis: “Successful author Veronica Henley finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.”

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the movie, “Antebellum” starring singer Janelle Monáe. This film has been one that I have anticipating all year! Since I saw the trailer I was intrigued and excited to see what it would contribute to the horror genre. The premise of this film is Janelle’s character Veronica who is a successful author, activist and professor wakes up in the era where slavery still exists and is a slave herself. She is tortured and trying to figure out how to escape!

This film comes in a timely manner as we are still dealing with racial turmoil with the fact that cops are still murdering black women and men and no justice is being served! This film reminded me a bit of Westworld without the robots! About 40 minutes into the film we realize this is taking place in the present not the past!

The film takes you on an emotional rollercoaster! The first act we see Veronica being tortured to assimilate to her new “home” and is even branded by this “confederate officer”. That scene had me yelling at the screen! You also see a black women being shot while trying to escape. All this is done on purpose so when the second and third act comes all you want is for Veronica to have her revenge! The second act takes you back to who Veronica really is and what she did before she got to that slavery plantation. It turns out she is an activist and professor with a PhD who speaks against racial oppression and black women empowerment. Which makes you question how come she didn’t escape sooner in the film. Puts into perspective when put in a situation are you all talk or will you take action! Also all the other black people that were kidnapped and placed there did not rebel and escape which was one of the flaws to me, but again it also shows the power of fear!

I won’t give up the final ending. I just wish the ending hadn’t been so abrupt. They could of showed what happened after in more detail. Overall I loved the cinematography, the foreshadowing, clues and the cast was amazing! This film will definitely make you angry, sad and victorious. I believe the theme of this film is that some people would enjoy going back to live in the Civil War era as morbid as that sounds. We all know racism is alive and well in America, sadly our whole country was built on it. This film also shows literally how we can break away from those chains to build a better world! I enjoyed this film, had a few flaws, but this definitely is a new gem in the horror genre! We get another black women final girl! Go check it out it is worth the watch!

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing Conway the Machine’s debut album, “From a King To A GOD”! Conway is a lyricist that hails from Buffalo, NY and is part of the Griselda Records crew! His crew is known for bringing back that New York grimey rap back to prominence! Conway is on my top 5 of emcees who are killing it right now! Those that know his story know how inspiring he is! Even after being shot and having Bell’s palsy he is a savage lyricist! This debut album shows why Conway and his crew are at the top!

Conway is a top tier emcee and this project proves it! My favorite tracks are From King, Seen Everything But Jesus (Featuring Freddie Gibbs), Fear of God, Spurs 3 and Jesus Khrysis. The whole project is dope! He raps about his struggle and how he made it this far. He raps how he remember his fallen soldiers and that makes him realize he is blessed to have what he has. Of course he also brings his braggadocio bars of how he went from a King to a GOD! If you haven’t already go peep this project! You get production from Alchemist, Daringer to DJ Premier. Truly a street poetic lyrical journey with inspirational verses!

NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “ZOOM DEMON!!! – HOST MOVIE REVIEW”

BY: GABY MORENO

Movie: Host

Main Cast: Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova, Caroline Ward

Release Date: August 17, 2020 (Shudder)

IMDB synopsis: “Six friends hire a medium to hold a seance via Zoom during lockdown, but they get far more than they bargained for as things quickly go wrong. When an evil spirit starts invading their homes, they begin to realize they might not survive the night.”

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the Shudder Original movie, “Host”. I had been hearing great things about this film so I decided to give in and watch it. For those of us who are horror fans we know there hasn’t been too many dope horror films this year. Especially with theaters being closed due to the pandemic that caused very highly anticipated horror films to be postponed or delayed in release. So anytime I hear great praise about a horror film I am willing to give it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. I didn’t have high expectations since Shudder movies for me are hit or miss. This one is a hidden gem, not much of a fan for found footage/camera horror, but this was well done!

The premise of this film as mentioned above is 6 friends get on a Zoom call, to entertain themselves during this quarantine they do a seance and end up waking up something evil. As soon as the seance is completed all of the people on the zoom call start to experience supernatural and creepy shit! I love that this film was done post Rona and we get a glimpse of our new reality. For example the scene when Jemma runs out to help Haley who has disappeared from the zoom call and she has to put on her mask, I thought that was brilliant! Really enjoyed this film it definitely creeped me out. I had to watch a non-horror film afterwards to erase the creepy images so I wouldn’t have nightmares lol. Go check out this movie you won’t be disappointed, the hype is real!

NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “COMMUNITY GONE WRONG!!! – 1BR MOVIE REVIEW” (SPOILERS)

BY: GABY MORENO

unnamed

Movie: 1BR

Main Cast: Nicole Brydon Bloom, Giles Matthey, Taylor Nichols and more

Release Date: July 31, 2020 (Netflix)

IMDB synopsis: “New to Los Angeles, a woman moves into a seemingly perfect apartment complex, and soon finds out that there are consequences for breaking the rules.”

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the movie, “1BR”. I kept hearing it is a great horror movie and saw it had 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, which Horror movies rarely have that high of a score. I decided to give it a shot, read the synopsis, but didn’t watch the trailer. The main premise is about a girl named Sarah who has just moved to LA. She is running away from her dad who cheated on her dying mother. She ends up finding this apartment complex that has an open 1BR apartment. She applies and from the beginning you get this eerie feeling from the tenants that live there. It’s like a Get Out/Stepford wives type of vibe. Everything seems too friendly and too good to be true. Needless to say Sarah gets the apartment and lies about not having a pet (cat).

The first few days there everyone is welcoming and extremely nice. Everything takes a dark turn when someone slips a note under her door and blackmails her about lying (having a pet). The apartment manager (more like leader) drags her into her apartment now turned into more like a prison cell. They torture her and attempt to brainwash her into believing in these cultish rules about “community”. Fast forward a bit she ends up being part of the “community”, but in the end she realizes this isn’t the life she wants. In an attempt to save a new “recruit” she escapes and runs out of the complex only to find out the whole neighborhood is controlled under this cult. If you watched the movie “The Invitation”, it reminded me of that movie. They could even be in the same universe, just a thought. Overall it was a good film. I had to sit with it a few days to see if I actually liked it. I give it credit for its originality. Go watch it, either you will hate it or love it!

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing Lvrd Daphne’s new album, “Rogue”. Daphne is a San Diego native who is bring her own sound with a positive message! Her sound is psychedelic trap and I definitely dig the vibe! She reminds me of a mix of IAMDDB and Chelsea the Reject, but she brings her own personality and message to her music. The whole project goes hard from the lyrics to the production. The project consists of 12 hard hitting tracks with an approximate running time of 42 minutes. I love when trap music has dope introspective lyricism and Daphne succeeds in doing this throughout the project. The project is about positivity, self love, knowledge of self and more! My favorite tracks are Extraterrestrial, Astral and Galaxy! Don’t sleep on this project go check it and bump it in your ride! Support your local artists!

NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “DEMON ROADIE!!! – UNCLE PECKERHEAD MOVIE REVIEW” (SPOILER)

BY: GABY MORENO

uncle-peckerhead

Movie: Uncle Peckerhead

Main Cast: Chet Siegel, David Littleton, Jeff Riddle, Ruby McCollister and more

Release Date: August 11, 2020 (Now on VOD)

IMDB synopsis: “When a punk band scores their first tour, life on the road proves tough when they are joined by a man-eating demon as a roadie.”

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the movie, “Uncle Peckerhead”, directed by Matthew John Lawrence. I kept seeing flyers and promo all over social media and the cover art to the film caught my eye. I decided to give it a shot and I was not disappointed. As mentioned before there haven’t been a lot of good horror movies in 2020 so was happy that this film delivered. The movie immediately begins with mutilated corpse on the road and what appears to be a man devouring the dead man’s jaw! Then the film pans to the main character Judy. The film follows 3 punk band mates who are barely making ends meet, but quit their 9 to 5 to follow their dreams of making it as a punk band. They want to go on tour to get their name out there. Their tour van ends up getting repossessed. Their issue now is that they have to hit the road the same day for their first show!

In desperation they create flyers and put them on cars windshields in the neighborhood to see who will allow them to borrow their car for their tour. They see this creepy white abandoned van and a few second later Uncle Peckerhead creeps up from behind them. He says he can let them borrow the car, but the only condition is he comes along as a roadie. They are desperate to they accept his proposal. They end up finding out Peckerhead is a man eating demon. This film has it all, there is gore, dark comedy and punk music!!! I really enjoyed this film, my expectations at first were not very high, but went in with an open mind. I was pleasantly surprised. If you love horror comedies and gore you will enjoy this film!

Thank you for reading my movie review. Hope you all enjoyed it! Until next time horror fiends and hip hop heads! Movie: Useless Humans

Main Cast: Josh Zuckerman, Rushi Kota, Davida Williams, Luke Youngblood and more

Release Date: July 14, 2020 (Now on VOD)

IMDB synopsis: “A thirtieth birthday — and the survival of mankind — are left hanging in the balance after a mysterious creature crashes the party, forcing four childhood friends to save the night.”

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the movie, “Useless Humans” directed by Stephen Ohl. The premise of the film follows four friends who after years are finally having a reunion in a remote cabin to celebrate one of their 30th birthdays! They encounter an alien who crashes the party! This is a sci-fi/horror/comedy that manages to include all those elements throughout the film. With everything going on right now and being a slow year for horror movies, this film came in as a breath of fresh air. I came across this movie online randomly and decided to give it a shot. It reminded me of a mix of American Pie, Men in Black and a bit of Attack the Block.

I actually enjoyed this movie. It was more of a feel good sci-fi comedy movie, it managed to keep my attention until the end. There were some plot points that I thought were not necessary like the 2 agents that come in mid-film. Other than that it is not a typical horror, so do not expect to be scared. It was more of an adventure filled film with lots of comedy! If you just want a film to laugh at and enjoy for its simplicity then definitely check out this movie! The alien did remind me a bit of the alien in The Stan Romanek documentary lol. Go check this movie if you love aliens and enjoy cheesy jokes! P.S. The track in the film “Superstar” by ill Addicts is dope, I had that song stuck in my head lol.

Thank you for reading my movie review. Hope you all enjoyed it! Until next time horror fiends and hip hop heads!
