Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be writing about my experience at this years THOP Hip Hop Festival. First of all I want to start off by saying I had a blast at the The Happiness of Pursuit Festival 2019!!! I had the opportunity to attend thanks to Platform Collection and be staff. I worked the red carpet and made sure the artists were photographed once they were done performing. I then guiding them to the media tent to be interviewed. Met a lot of dope photographers. Special shout out to Dahflow and Nah’Shon for helping out! Also shout out to I Above for teaming up to get the artist from the stage to the red carpet! Also since I was working the event it allowed me backstage access which I was very hyped about!

20191005_181543

It was an unforgettable experience and I felt like I was destined to be there as corny as that might sound. As a kid who grew up listening to Rap music to be able to see Hip Hop legends like Havoc from Mobb Deep, Crooked I and R.A. the Rugged Man bless the stage, get to see them perform both from the audience perspective and backstage was an amazing feeling! As a music lover this was a dream come true! I always knew that I would end up working in the music industry either as an artist myself, songwriter or on the business/media side. To have worked this event was a huge milestone for me and makes me realize I am on the right path. I am going to continue to grind and better myself in my craft!

20191005_115137

Being at the THOP festival was a surreal and dope experience I observed and soaked in a lot of game. Thank you to the Founder of THOP Fest 60 East for the opportunity to help with the event. Also to KillcRey who I see as my mentor for bringing me on board, trusting in me and my work ethic!!! It was dope that my Spooky sis Yazi also joined me on this journey she was running the THOP fest twitter account for the day and did a hell of a job covering the event!

The event took place at the Firewater Bar in Ontario, CA. The venue/bar is at the entrance and behind the bar is a huge empty lot. As you enter there are food vendors, clothing vendors, art vendors, music vendors etc. The main stage is on your right as you enter the lot. On the left hand side of the main stage is where I was most of the time. Which is where media and performers are coming in and out. They also had a VIP tent set up for Murs and Havoc from Mobb Deep.

20191005_161430

The Platform Collection stage was situated on the far left hand side corner of the lot. Platform Collection provided the opportunity for San Diego artists to perform at this years festival. I got to see my friends Nemy, Indian K, The Difference and Billy NoJokes rock the stage! They each have been grinding hard this whole year and earned their spot on that stage! I was happy and proud they got to perform in front of a whole new audience to build their following! Also DJ Root had the opportunity to DJ for R.A. the Rugged Man!

20191005_153027

I loved the diversity of the lineup you got a mixture of Hip Hop lyrical legends, street rap, soulful rap, underground rap, and melodic rap. It was perfect because as we all know there are so many sub-genres of Rap nowadays and the audience gravitates to different types of artists. The energy from every performer was amazing. They each brought their own style and vibe.

20191005_174741

The people who attended the event fed off the energy of the artist and it was a dope crowd! Met some dope people that night! Also got to chat a bit with Big Noyd who was droppin some gems on how rap has created a new language and no other genre has really done that. I was able to meet one of my favorite underground emcee’s Crimeapple who was super nice and signed my vinyl copy of Wet Dirt, took a picture with me and gave me a Sweet Dreams (Freddy Krueger) hat! Crimeapple murdered his performance. I love that he raps in Spanglish! I also got to meet Crooked I and R.A the Rugged Man. Both were very humble and they each killed their set! I was very fortunate to have met other artists as well from Vel the Wonder to Nash Boogie.

20191005_221357

Overall this event was well put together. Can’t wait to attend the next one and I am down to work this event again if given the opportunity. The event ran smoothly some things had to be improvised, but everyone on 60 East’s team and Platform Collection handled it well! I never had the chance to attend Paid Dues or Rock the Bells, but I feel 60 East is keeping the spirit alive and is contributing a lot to the Hip Hop community. I hope this event continues for many more years to come. I can’t wait what next years lineup will be! If you have never attended THOP fest I definitely recommend going it is worth every penny and you will have a once in a lifetime experience!

NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “El TIGRE Y EL CONEJO!!! -J BALVIN & BAD BUNNY – OASIS ALBUM REVIEW”

BY: GABY MORENO

220px-J_Balvin_and_Bad_Bunny_-_Oasis

Artist: J Balvin & Bad Bunny

Album: Oasis

Release Date: June 28, 2019

Buy/Stream album: All streaming platforms

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing J Balvin and Bad Bunny’s highly anticipated collaborative album “Oasis“. I’ve been patiently waiting for this album to drop since it was announced last year. I gotta admit I had high expectations for this album given that it is two of the mega Reggaeton/Latin trap/Latin superstars. Also they always deliver dope music individually and collaborating together to make a project I knew it was gonna be lit! I was not wrong! These two talented musicians created a beautiful body of work! This is more of an EP there are only 8 tracks, but the themes and sound go well together.

The album consists of 31 minute running time which is perfect for this era of having to consume a high volume of music daily! I literally put this album on rotation in my car and at work and played it over like 4 times. Todas las canciones estan duras! In this EP you get a mixture of Reggaeton, ballads, pop y latin trap! Musica Urbana at its finest! The title of the album Oasis is fitting, you get a Caribbean and vacation vibe to it! You can cruise to the beach or bump it at a party or club! You have your party/dancing tracks, your heartbreak/ballad songs and just songs you can bump in your car!

j-balvin-y-bad-bunny-logran-marca-historica-en-billboard-con-oasis-ab558
One of the tracks, “Yo Le Llego” has a dope bass and the exotic trap beat is just fire! J Balvin and Bad Bunny both go in! Then you get their hit single, “Que Pretendes” which has a catchy hook, I learned it after hearing it twice lol. It is a song about an ex tryna come back and knowing exactly what to do to try to get back together, but they are smart and not falling into her game this time! Then you get a slowed down ballad track called, “La Cancion” which is one of my favorites! The trumpet adds something else to this track! Also the lyrics are very deep and shows J Balvin and Bad Bunny’s versatility. The song is about hearing that one song when they’ve been drinking that reminds them about that ex they never really got over. They rap how they thought they had forgotten them, but the song still brings back memories. But they are happy their ex is happy with their significant other. You also get an island feel with the song, “Un Peso“. This song is about not caring about an ex who left them for someone else and now they want them back. I really loved that they featured lead singer of Los Enanitos Verdes, Marciano Cantero. His voice is unique and adds a nice touch to the track. The last track I will mention is, “Odio“, which in English translates “Hate”. The track is pretty self explanatory lol. I love this track too! It’s catchy and I love the dark sense of humor. The song is about them hating their ex and wishing they are not happy.

This EP/album is dope! I definitely recommend buying a copy or just streaming it! I always say this, latin trap/ Reggaeton/Musica Urbana is so similar to the Hip Hop culture it is Spanish rap with other elements and that is why I love this genre so much as well! So if you like Hip Hop and love some feel good music then give this EP a listen! You don’t even gotta understand the language to enjoy the music!

Thank you for reading my review. Hope you all enjoyed it! Until next time horror fiends and hip hop heads! While you’re at it follow my blog on social media @7octoberz  on Instagram and Facebook! LATINO GANG!!!

NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “EERIE RAP TALE -PARKER EDISON (PRODUCED/VOCALS BY: DJ PNUTZ)!!! – GASLIT SINGLE REVIEW”

BY: GABY MORENO

image1

Artist: Parker Edison and Prod. DJ Pnutz

Single: Gaslit

Release Date: Oct. 5, 2019

Buy/Stream album: All streaming platforms

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing Parker Edison’s Halloween track titled, “Gaslit“. Parker reached out to me and told me he was dropping a horror themed single and I was sold! I did not need convincing in reviewing this. This is my first single review so hope I can capture the message I took from this song. I will keep it brief and to the point. The song kicks off right away and grabs your attention. Producer DJ Pnutz did her thing on the production! As soon as the beat drops you get this eerie vibe that something scary or sinister is gonna go down. I say it is like Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend”, but with a dark twist.

This single is very creative. I felt like I was listening to a short film. It was a mixture of a lifetime movie and Slim Shady’s song “Kim” and “Kill You“. This is a dark tale of how obsession can consume you to the point where you become a psycho or someone vindictive!!! This is a spooky song about a man who is not corresponded the way he would like to be and is simply friend zoned. He has created this false reality or perception that him and this person belong together. To the point that it is a toxic obsession versus actual love.

He then becomes angered when he finds out she likes someone else and burns her house down. Definitely check out this song, worth a couple listens to grasp the whole story! This is a perfect creepy storytelling rap song to start of the best month of the year!!! October here we go!!! Parker you literally killed this!

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the EP, “Gruesome Twosome” by my two favorite spooky lyricists and hermanos, Smalls Uno and Sick Rick!!! What better day than to release a spooky project on Friday the 13th! From start to finish this project has horror vibes! If you are a horror fan and hip hop head you will definitely enjoy this body of work. You get pure grimey lyricism and horror references! The cover art was done by talented artist El Skinny Guapo, the art sets the mood for what we can expect! Fuck mumble rap! Smalls and Rick are bringing the murderous bars!

This is a short EP, but do not be fooled every track cuts deep! Perfect timing before Fall starts! The first track titled, “Krueger vs. Vorhees” the Gruesome Twosome lyrically assassinate every rhyme! Definitely a strong track to begin the project and set the scary mood! Then the second track which is my favorite of this project called, “Ghouls & Goblins” has a beat that sounds like the organ from Phantom of the Opera. It is also reminiscent of the Yonkers song by Tyler the Creator! I love the horror references throughout the track! Then you get the track, “Spooky” which is easily a Spooky anthem, both Smalls and Rick go in bar for bar!

The remaining 2 tracks continue with the spooky theme and creative horror lyricism! Go support the Spooky fam and cop this album or stream it! This is the perfect project to bump for this upcoming Fall season. Time to get Spooky!!!

NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “BOOMBAP STORYTELLIN!!!– KIDDO (EOTR) – ESCAPISM EP REVIEW”

BY: GABY MORENO

Artist: Kiddo (Produced by Badson and one track by Postmark)

Album: Escapism

Release Date: Sept 8, 2017

Buy/Stream album: All streaming platforms

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the EP titled, “Escapism” by Kiddo from EOTR. Kiddo is an LA (Whittier, CA) emcee who is a talented lyricist and has bars!!! She is part of the East of The River collective that consists of dope emcees, producers and a singer! I had heard of Kiddo through YouTube recommendations a few years back, when the LA Hip Hop scene was pouring with a lot of young talent and still is! I thought she was dope, but failed to keep up with her music. I also remember seeing her on a cypher effect video and thought she was dope.

Flash forward to when I started attending HipHopWeds in San Diego this year. I went to one of the events and one of the emcees from her crew EOTR Mad Macks who also happens to be her boyfriend performed that night. I saw her working the merch table and realized I recognized her. I went up to her and introduced myself. I told her I had a Hip Hop and Horror blog and thought she was dope and if any future projects were in the works to let me know. She was very humble and mentioned she had an old project and sent me the Spotify link.

The EP titled, “Escapism” dropped in 2017 with just 7 tracks of pure raw lyricism, storytelling and amazing production. I believe the length is perfect, gives you time to vibe to the project a few times. Kiddo is a very introspective and a poetic lyricist. She raps over boom bap beats. Also you get jazzy vibes and loved the DJ scratches! The sound/production of the overall album gives you an old school vibe which I love!

The first track called, “Making a Feeling” she raps for those chasing their fates and trying to reach their dreams! It is sort of an anthem to be proud you are following your path! Then the track titled, “Buy In” she goes in and talks about the struggles she has to face as a female in the Hip Hop scene and just the world! Def an anthem for the ladies to vibe too. Very relatable track, as a woman we gotta fight twice to earn respect both from men and women! Also the haters and the people you thought had your back change on you. The beat is dope as fuck as well! Hands down my favorite track on this project.

I also loved the acapella Kiddo does at the end of “Chocolates Interlude” she raps about when she first started rapping and trying to find her purpose, very powerful verse! Another dope track is, “Escape” which is a storytelling track. She raps escapism runs in everyone’s blood and it does not discriminate! She tells stories from three different peoples perspectives (including herself). Very deep song! Def recommend checking out this project! To keep up with her latest music follow her on IG @kiddohiphop !!!

Thank you for reading my review. Hope you all enjoyed it! Until next time horror fiends and hip hop heads! NIGHTMARE ON SEDGWICK AVENUE – “MELODIC DUO WITH A LATIN FLOW!!! -DOBLE PHILO & EXCIEL – VIRGO EP REVIEW”

BY: GABY MORENO

maxresdefault

Artist: Doble Philo & Exciel

Album: Virgo

Release Date: Aug. 23, 2019

Buy/Stream album: All streaming platforms

Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the EP titled, “Virgo” by San Diego’s very own local artists Doble Philo and Exciel! This is an album in the musica urbana genre. You get a mixture of Reggaeton and latin trap! For those that know me, know that I love Reggaeton and latin trap. I grew up listening to Reggaeton when it became popular in the early 2000s after “Oye Mi Canto” his the U.S. airwaves. Ever since then I been a fan of the musica urbana genre! I’ve been trying to find local San Diego artists that make music in that genre because I believe it is another genre that is finally getting the respect it deserves like Rap. Musica Urbana is reaching global dominance and I am happy to see that! I was hyped when I came across Doble Philo’s music! I actually saw him perform at a De La Flow show hosted by the homie Ill Arabe. Doble Philo stood out to me from the rest of the performers. I could tell he had a true talent to rap on the mic and to also see him rap in Spanish was even more inspiring! I started following him on social media and saw that he announced he had dropped a project.

The EP Virgo just dropped in August in time for the summer vibes! The EP features Doble Philo and Exciel. They make a dope duo. If I’m not mistaken Doble Philo is the rapper and Exciel brings the melodic singing. They make a great duo, their own unique skills compliment each other. They reminded me a bit of Rakim & Ken-Y which is one of my favorite Reggeaton duo’s from back in the day. Rakim was the rapper and Ken-Y the singer, they balanced each other perfectly and created hits! It is dope to see these two guys creating dope music in that genre and that they are from my hometown of SD.

d3ce9daef149569b69ebae42290db2ff3119bb65

The EP consists of 5 track, wish it was longer! This EP definitely leaves you wanting to hear more from these two! My two favorite tracks of this project are “Obsesionada” and “Infiel” both have a mainstream sound and I can see them blowing up! The hooks are catchy, the beats melodic and lyrics relatable for people in relationships or in complicated relationships lol. Then you get the track “China Blanca” which is more of a trap song, but you can’t help than to vibe to it! The track “Salvaje” reminded me of the old school Reggaeton beats something I could hear Wisin y Yandel on. The final track “Sube y Baja” has the new latin trap sound that I am currently obsessed with. Gives me a latin R&B vibe. The whole project is sonically hypnotizing. If you love Reggaeton and latin trap like I do, you will enjoy this project. Go stream it, vibe to it, listen to it or just share it! I definitely recommend giving it a listen!

Thank you for reading my movie review. Hope you all enjoyed it! Until next time horror fiends and hip hop heads!
