Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

In honor of Flashback Friday I will be reviewing Rob Markman’s EP, “Write to Dream”. It is no secret that Rob Markman is one of my favorite journalists. He inspired me to start doing this journalism thing! He stands out from his journalistic peers because he asks unique interview questions and is very knowledgeable about who he interviews. He truly shows he has love for rap and the Hip Hop culture. I hope one day to be a great journalist as he is! Rob is also the Head of Artist Relations at Genius. He has come a long way! In 2017 Rob Markman released his first EP, “Write to Dream”.

The EP consists of 8 tracks that are very introspective about him growing up in a violent neighborhood and having to survive it. Throughout the EP he shows how some people doubted his vision about releasing this project. Rob Markman holds his own in this project and proves he can spit! This project definitely earned him respect in the rap game. I had no doubt that he would put out a dope project!

  1. Last Night – I love the guitar instrumental. It is a great way to start off the project. This is a deep track about him living in a neighborhood that is filled with violence and how he almost got shot, but he survived! He raps about how this incident made him realize he has a right to dream!
  2. I Don’t Wanna Wait – He continues the theme about living in a neighborhood where not everyone is lucky enough to make it out and live out their dreams. This is a very introspective track, he talks about what he saw growing up in the streets. From drug fiends, gang violence and PTSD.
  3. Fredo – This track pays homage to “The Godfather” where two brothers turn on each other. He also speaks on how sometimes the closest people and family turn on you!
  4. Khalifa’s Callin’– This a funny interlude where Wiz Khalifa is laughing that Rob wants to rap and even asks him if he knows what it takes to release a project.
  5. Benz For My Bday – This track is a banger! Rob talks about how he wanted a Benz for his birthday.
  6. Jason’s Lyric – I really loved the sound of the rain and thunder in this track! This track pays homage to Biggie’s Somebody’s Gotta Die. This track proves that Rob has the ability to tell a story lyrically!
  7. Writer – This is hands down my favorite track on the project! It is a very inspirational and motivational track. He speaks about going against the grain by following his dream and vision and believing in himself! He spits bars and earns his respect lyrically!
  8. This Mornin’ – This track loops back to the intro track. He explains how not getting shot allowed him to live out his dreams and be one of the successful stories/people to make it out of his hood by working hard and staying driven to achieve his dreams! Very emotional track where he spits about how some of his closest friends have died and didn’t get to reach their full potential. This song reminded me of the quote from my favorite movie, “The Saddest Thing In Life Is Wasted Talent!”

Rob put out a solid EP for his first round! He conveys a positive message throughout the project which is that we all have a right to dream! This project dropped about 2 years ago, since then Rob announced earlier this year that he is working on his next project,”It’s 2 Late At The Wake!” He mentioned in an interview earlier this year that this next project will be a continuation of the same concept from this EP. The main concept is that we have to follow our dreams before it is too late. By the time we die it is too late, so start doing things you want now!

I can’t wait to see what Rob brings next musically. I will continue to support both his career as a journalist, emcee and whatever he decides to dive in next creatively! Do yourself a favor and check out this project if you have not listened to it yet, you won’t regret!

Favorite Tracks/Verses:

1. I Don’t Wanna Wait:

“Couple shots close range, I think God intervened
Same corner I seen needles in arms of a fiend
Same corner I seen teens bear arms for the green
Same corner I seen kings die for a dream
Somethin’ like survivor’s remorse
So when I hit St. Paul’s, make the sign of the cross
Word to Wallace and the solace that I find in the lord
Found God ’round the time Al died in the Bronx”

2. Writer:

“This the warm up, the game ain’t even started
I’m just pennin’, I swear I could go harder
It’s just me, I swear I’m the only writer
I’m the Ol’ Dirty Bastard, my style ain’t got no father
I’m beggin’, father, it’s spirits with their lyricism
Couple Caspers in the game, we need an exorcism
If they sleep, get ’em out their bed then
Linda Blair with these verses, make their head spin”

3. This Mornin’:

“Wrong place, wrong time, anyone could get it
And this movie that I’m in, coulda ended like Menace
I thank God that he saved me in the edit
And stopped my baby from cryin’ at the credits
Woke up this mornin’, layin’ in bed
Thinkin’, “Shit, if I ain’t duck, man, I coulda been…”
Wouldn’t be here now, spittin’ this gospel
If you ain’t in a box, then everything’s possible
My man used to spin ‘fore they shot him to death
Coulda been Esco, he coulda been Flex
Know a crackhead who rap, coulda been X
And a dude with a handle who coulda been next
Fuck the shoulda, coulda, woulda, I’m gettin’ it now
Nightmares of my peers that’s dead in the ground
This is all I ever wanted, and everything I worked for
Penny for your thoughts, I just knew my words worth more
And I don’t even know what hurts more
To get it and to lose it, or don’t get it at all”
