Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the movie “Pet Sematary“. This film is a remake of the 1989 version under the same title and based on Stephen King’s novel. I am a huge fan of the original film! I was a bit skeptical when I heard it was being remade. Honestly this is one film I did not think needed to be remade. Yes it is a bit cheesy, but for its time the acting, practical effects and character development was on point. The movie was dark and touched on topics of death, life after death and ghosts from our pasts that sooner or later get you if you don’t deal with them.

For those who have never seen the original film or read the book here is a brief synopsis. The movie is about the Creed family who moves to a small town in Maine due to Louis Creed being a Doctor. His family consists of his wife Rachel, daughter Ellie, son Gage and their cat Church. Their daughter wanders off into the woods behind their new home and sees there is a pet cemetery. They have a neighbor named Jud Crandall who has lived in that town all his life and  befriends the Creed family. Early in the film Church gets ran over by a semi truck. To get to the point Jud shows Louis the Indian burial ground to bury Church. Unbeknownst to Louis the cat comes back from the dead, but he is not the same.

Then moving to the climax of the movie Gage is flying a kite. Louis is not paying attention and his son heads towards the road and is killed by a semi truck. Louis is filled with grief and ends up digging up his son’s body and buries him at the burial grounds that resurrected Church. Needless to say Gage comes back from the dead, but something far more sinister than his son comes back. I will leave it at that go watch the original film to know what happens next.

The remake switches up a few things. The actress who portrays Ellie in this film was not charismatic. The actor who played Gage in the original had more charisma! This remake also lacked character development. They focused more on the jump scares and eeriness of the movie. I could care less what happened to the Creed family in this film. Also Victor Pascow had more lines in the original film and served as a narrator to guide Louis. In the original film Victor also served as a warning to the demise of Louis’ family. In this remake he showed up, but barely had a purpose.

A few spoilers where this movie differentiates from the original film is their daughter Ellie is the one who is killed by the semi truck. In this film Zelda who is Rachel’s older sister that suffered from spinal meningitis death scene is different. In the original Zelda starts having convulsions and chokes to death. That scene from the original film was far more creepy and haunting. Still one of the creepiest scenes in that film. In this remake her death is caused by Rachel sending up food through a dumbwaiter and Zelda tries to get the food and falls to her death inside the dumbwaiter with her body twisted up. I feel that death scene did not make any sense given Zelda was bed ridden and due to her current state would have not been able to drag herself to the dumbwaiter. Major loophole in my opinion. There were a few other changes, but those were the one’s that stood out the most.

Overall I was not too impressed with this film. As the tagline says, “Sometimes Dead Is Better” and this remake would have been better off dead (pun intended). Maybe I am just too close minded and clouded by the love I have for the original. The film was NOT horrible it just did not live up to the hype. The only cool thing that was different than the original was the mention of the Wendigo, the Native American legend. As well as the cat, he was my favorite character in that movie lol. I don’t recommend this movie to be seen in theaters. I would save my money and if you are bored on a rainy night stream it once it is released. I recommend viewing the original instead though. Stephen King has a cameo in it and it has a darker ending!

Thank you for reading my review. Hope you all enjoyed it! Until next time horror fiends and hip hop heads! While you’re at it follow my blog on social media @7octoberz and Facebook!
