Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Tucked into a dimly lit booth amongst the flurry of cascading lights and sounds you’ll find the dynamic and compelling producer, Gene Flo. I caught up with Gene recently to discuss his new single “Do it with Song” featuring prominent San Diego based Rapper Nemy, which is quickly becoming a staple on every local hip hop heads playlist. Gene had this to say when asked about his new project,

Mike Mackey: “Hey Gene, how’s it going? I’m curious, what was your inspiration while creating “Do it with Song?”

Gene Flo: “I create in the moment. I go off the energy in the room. I don’t think too much and just go with the FLO. I flipped the sample and the “I LOVE YOU” vocal set the tone.”

This empyreal approach to his production style sets Gene Flo apart from his contemporaries. This sentiment was also shared by Nemy, who had this to say:

Nemy: “Me and Gene been in the lab a few times. it’s easy. Play beat, I like it, then I jump on it. Simple. He takes care of the technical.”

Nemy also had this to add, “The creative process depends on the vibe. Especially for me because I do not write. I do it all in my head. So I gotta be in a good space in my noggin to give the best work possible. This joint we did was our first session together last year. I did this joint maybe in 15-20 mins if I’m correct. We been sitting on it for awhile. What better day than Valentine’s Day to release it!”

This seamless production style compliments Nemy’s veracious subject matter of love lost, and a yearning to return to a feeling of the essence of Love.

Nemy: “So, “Do it with song” is one of those joints that most of us can relate to. Whoever has been in a real relationship has most likely experienced something like that. Many have lost “a good one’. U know?”

Nemy continued: “My message more than the subject matter in the record would be to not to be afraid to be vulnerable as an artist. So it didn’t matter what the song was. If you’re willing to take it there, “personal” I think u gotta respect it.”

Nemy’s tenacious and fervent approach to lyricism is unparalleled on this record. He crafts an ardent picture of a man who is reconciling with his past mistakes, and atoning for a love once had. Even more impressive is the fact that Nemy was able to completely improvise this record with such precision and poise. That focused work ethic is a reflection of his professionalism and mastery of his craft.

Gene Flo had this to add as well, “Working with Nemy is like working with a hungry boxer in a training session. He will not be outworked in the studio. Watch out for Nemy to be on everyones playlist all year and for years to come!”

I couldn’t agree more. You can catch Gene Flo performing “Do it with Song” and other hits at this year’s THOP Festival in Ontario CA April 4th, Nemy will be providing some hosting duties for this festival as well, he might even jump in on a feature, so keep a look out!
